The economic research in Tajikistan is initiated in the late 40s with the creation of sector of economics in the Tajik Branch of the USSR, which in 1951 was reorganized as the Department of Economics and later on in 1964 was upgraded as Institute of Economics. Since then a systematic organization of research in the essential areas of particular economic science, as well as the training of highly qualified personnel in the economy's leading sectors of the economy of Tajikistan started. A considerable work is carried out to solve integrated economic problems, strengthen the ties of economic science to the needs of production and to expand the scope of training of scientists and economists.

Activities for the development of economic researches and training of scientists and economists allowed starting developing a number of research topics on the economy of the most important branches of national economy of the republic, industry and agriculture. Up to the mid-50's, the researches of the economists were primarily in the economic and geographic characterization of the republic and its individual regions. However, in the subsequent years, focus has been directed to the productivity, production cost reduction, rural economy, industrial equipment and industrial development.

Since 1964 a large group of researchers of the Institute of Economics was involved in the development of “Scientific bases of placing of productive forces of the USSR in economic regions”. The institute became the co-executor for the compilation of “Scheme development and deployment of the productive forces of the Taj SSR in the long term”. Together with SOPS of Academy of Sciences and Gosplan of USSR, Tajik Institute of economic made development scheme and placed the manufacturer forces of the Tajik SSR during 1966-1970.

Employees of the institute together with staff of Gosplan started compiling “Scheme of development and deployment of the productive forces of the republic in the more distant prospects” for industry, agriculture and transport during 1971-1980.

The economic problem of Tajikistan was exactly impossible to solve using “traditional” methods. With the development of a multi production complex of the republic, the best possible approximation was obtained. For this department of “Optimal Planning” was organized, which in a short time did considerable work on the optimal planning of the national economy.

In the researches of the Institute, a considerable place is occupied by the problem of increased efficiency of capital assets and capital investments. The main results of these investigations were the determination of the capabilities of the population economy of the republic to increase the efficiency of production.

Scientific achievement of the Institute includes methods of modeling and forecasting of investment for effective capital investments of South-Tajik territorial industrial complex.

The Institute of Economics was the leading agency, under the leadership of the Republican Council on Scientific, Technical and Socio-economic forecasting that developing, with participation of ministries and departments of a complex program of scientific and technological progress of Tajik SSR in 1986-2005.

The main results of the researches of Institute are:

  • assessment of scientific, technical and socio-economic development of the Republic of Tajikistan, and analysis of structural changes in the economy;
  • development of priority directions of science, analysis of demographic and labor problems resources;
  • identifying ways to address environmental issues and to identify specific factors affecting the functioning of the economy of Tajikistan during the transition to a market economy.


In 1993, in accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Tajikistan, on the basis of the Institute of Economics, in order to ensure scientific solutions for international economic, political, social, cultural and legal issues, the Institute of World Economy and international relations were organized.

Structure of IMEMO included three departments: Economics, Department of International Relations and a branch office in Khujand.

Staff of the Institute prepared reports, notes for government agencies on foreign and political relations of the Republic of Tajikistan, participated in many international and national conferences, symposium and seminars. IMEMO developed the following tasks: “The integration of the economy of the Republic of Tajikistan into the global economy (1996-2000)”, “Foreign Economic Policy of the Republic of Tajikistan (1996-2000)”, and “Foreign Policy of the Republic of Tajikistan (1996-2000 years)”.

The Institute of Economics was transformed to IMEMO in 1993 and up to 2000 and was headed by the academician R.K. Rakhimov. Government of the Republic of Tajikistan in January 2000, established the Institute of Economics on the base of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations and the Council for the Study of Productive Forces of the Republic of RT. As per order of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the duties of the Director of the Institute of Economics of the Republic of Tajikistan has been assigned to the Assistant to the President of the Republic of Tajikistan A. Raufi, who led the institute till 2011.

In February 2011, by the decision of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Institute of Demography and Institute of Economics were merged into the Institute of Economics and Demography of RT and O.B. Boboev was appointed as a director of the Institute.

In departments and laboratories of the joint Institute, researches are conducted researches on the following issues of economics and demographics:

  • corporate management of natural monopolies and very large enterprises;
  • market relations in the context of political liberalization;
  • competition of business in Tajikistan;
  • the impact of business on poverty alleviation in the country;
  • the development of industrial enterprises in Tajikistan, the private sector in agriculture, micro-credit support to small industrial businesses, non-price competition of the industrial enterprise;
  • food security of the Republic of Tajikistan;
  • proper use of investment in rural development;
  • the development of the transport system in the republic in ecological and economic aspects;
  • the monetary system of the Republic of Tajikistan, the development of securities market, stock market, the leasing market, insurance market;
  • the current state and dynamics of the Tajik families and development strategies to improve the state of family population policy;
  • labor migration, its factors, motives, environmental social and demographic reasons of migration in the country;
  • an aging of population and human development.

Promising areas of research of the institute are:

  • identification of key areas of transformation and deepening of the market economy;
  • study of development and strengthening of integration processes and cooperation in the transitional economy of Tajikistan;
  • the promotion and protection problems of financing and investment, encouraging the development of small and medium enterprises;
  • improving the theory, practice and public policy in the field of population;
  • research issues of bilateral cooperation in the field of ecology and environmental demography;
  • the development of the theory of internal and external migration (immigration and emigration), urbanization and resettlement;
  • research in the aging population and the prediction of numerical values and the composition of the population, the identification of combined effects of various variants of the demographic development;
  • study of patterns of urbanization and resettlement of the population in Tajikistan, and demographic aspects of marriage and family, ecological aspects of demographic development, the interaction of economic and demographic processes in the Republic of Tajikistan;
  • development of options for the forecasting the size and composition of the population for the period until 2050 and the consequences of changes in the composition of the population of the Republic of Tajikistan.


Economists and demographers of the Institute are involved in the development of Concept of the State Population Policy of the Republic of Tajikistan and Program Implementation of the Concept of State Population Policy of the Republic of Tajikistan for the period 2003-2015.

At the Institute, combined Dissertation Council for doctoral and candidate's theses in “Economics of population and demography’ operates. The Institute has 120 employees, including 8 DPhil (Doctor of Philosophy) and 19 candidate of science. In post graduate course, there are 36 graduate students.
