By the resolution of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan on February 4, 2008, Geophysical Service of the Republic of Tajikistan was organized. Academician S.H. Negmatullaev was appointed as Head of the Geophysical Service.

The main purpose of the Geophysical Service is to conduct continuous seismic, geodynamic, geodetic and other types of observations, data collection and operational information about the earthquakes occurring in the territory of Tajikistan and neighboring countries, the occurrence of the Geophysical Service of RT to the International Global Network and training of highly qualified personnel.

In addition, in connection with the signing of the Treaty on Nuclear-Free Zone in Central Asia, Geophysical Survey should be involved in the monitoring of nuclear sites in the neighboring countries and promptly informing about tests made to the relevant organizations and agencies for the timely radiation monitoring.

With the support of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), an NGOs, “PMP International” worked on the project “Rehabilitation of the seismic monitoring network in Tajikistan”. The Swiss government through SDC funded the supply and installation of the first broadband digital seismic stations with satellite communications. The new stations, in accordance with an agreement with the “Barki Tojik” are located to cover areas of existing, under construction and planned hydropower plants in central, southern, north of the republic and the Pamirs.

With the assistance of Canadian experts of company “Nanometrics” (David Riiyki Moore) and the Swiss Federal Institute for Geosciences (Peter Zweifel), a network of digital broadband seismic stations was established. Employees of “PMP International” have been trained abroad to work on these stations.

The network of seven widely-band seismic stations with a satellite communication system is the support for the creation of local networks in the area of Rogun and other power plants (Dashti Dzhumskoy HPP cascade of hydro power plants Zeravshan), as well as for the seismic monitoring and exchange of seismic data with the seismological center of neighboring countries.

To-date, seismic system detects 500-700 events in a month with energy class K≥3, of which more than 200 events have energy class K≥10. A monthly Seismological newsletter is sent to the interested organizations. By geophysical Service, base waveforms of events larger than 300 GB for the period from 2005-2011 was established. For full development of software issues in processing and analyzing of obtained digital data, HS collaborates with IRIS, by Nanometrics and Geophysical Research Institute of the National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan and its data center.

Through collaboration with the German Research Center of the Earth (GFZ, Potsdam), the Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences (CAIAG, Bishkek, CR), the Research Station of RAS (Bishkek, CR) and the Institute of Geology of RT in the Pamirs it was organized registration of earthquakes in the standby mode network of 30 seismic stations «Guralp», located in the area of one of the most seismically active faults in Tajikistan as part of the Tien Shan - Pamir geodynamic programs.

As a result of joint research it was obtained unique information that can help to build the profile structure of the earth to a depth of 800 km, as well as offer possible mechanism of formation of heavy-duty crust and mantle genesis of earthquakes of the Pamir.

To ensure control over the seismic area under construction cascade is planned to create a local network stations in the area of the upper and middle reaches of the river of Vakhsh. This will require a 4-5 broadband digital stations with satellite programs. Base station in the area of Rogun hydroelectric plant is planned to organize at Top Maydon. Directorate of building of hydro power plant for these purposes has already built a special building for the Center for seism physical monitoring the main unit of Rogun hydroelectric plant and area of the future reservoir.

Creating a system of geological, seismic and deformation monitoring for the cascade of hydropower plants on the river Vakhsh is one of the most urgent tasks for the near future. Special attention requires the study of excited seismicity associated with the technological processes due to the construction of large reservoirs.

Filling of the Nurek reservoir showed that the tension due to overload on the earth's crust is transferred to the system of faults over long distances. Completion of the Sangtuda and Rogun plants will create reservoir, located in the area of one of the seismically active faults in Tajikistan. In this regard, it is important now to begin seismological observations in the future Rogun reservoir area and the entire middle reaches of the river Vakhsh. It must have at least 5 - 6 digital broadband seismic stations with satellite communication to monitor the seismic regime of the territory and the choice of optimal filling of the reservoir that is under construction.
